The fish in this painting – based on an armored catfish – looks as if it is ready for anything… you might know people like this; they’d like to be ready for anything; they’d organize the ocean, if they could, just so they could know what’s going to be where. It’s all about the knowing, really. About being able to feel prepared. Surprise is not a welcome visitor in Control’s domain.
But if you look closely, you’ll see that both within the applied order and outside of it, chaos reigns. Each gem-shaped space contains a captured intimation of the ocean’s chaos. Wildness tamed… or at least controlled somewhat. There… that’s better now… but, oh… where did those bubbles come from? How did they break free? And from where? We are never free from the unexpected, no matter our attempts at prediction and control.
Life… it’s like that. No matter how hard we try, no matter how much we organize ourselves and our spaces and our lives… there’s always something… and yet, when seen from just the right angle, it fairly glows.
